The 20 counties where Kamala Harris lost the most votes to Donald Trump

In the three weeks since Kamala Harris‘ devastating election defeat, the Democrats have tried to come to terms with a daunting reality: Donald Trump‘s support grew substantially nationwide.

Even in the states that were called blue, the Republican saw a groundswell of popularity that carried him to a decisive victory in what polls suggested would be one of the closest races in history.

Trump received more than 2.5 million votes than he did in 2020 and gained ground in all of the 50 states, while Harris saw a decline of seven million votes from President Joe Biden‘s total in his 2020 win.

The vice president’s party has been trying to figure out what happened, and the finger-pointing has sparked a furious debate that will keep going until the next presidential election cycle.

The statistics show that Harris lost some counties the Democrats have won in every presidential election since 2008.

In some cases she managed to keep some areas blue, but the loss in support represents the nationwide shift that ultimately secured the presidency for Trump.

DailyMail.com’s data journalism team has broken down the 20 counties from around the country that saw the biggest move from blue to red.

In Maverick, Texas, Harris saw 13.82 percent less support than  Biden, giving Trump the first Republican victory there in five election cycles.

There are also appearances from counties in the usually safe Democratic states of New York, New Jersey and California.

In New York City, for example, Harris recorded the worst results from someone in her party since 1988.

In the Bronx, she saw a 10.73 percent drop in support compared to Biden in 2020.

The Empire State still voted for Harris, but losses elsewhere sealed her fate.

Miami-Dade County, Florida – a once solidly blue county with an almost 70 percent Hispanic population – voted for the first Republican president since 1988.

Arizona is the only one of the seven swing states where counties make an appearance on the list.

In Yuma County, which sits on the border with Mexico, Harris saw an 11 percent drop in support compared with 2020.

Trump ended up sweeping the seven battlegrounds that polls determined were on a knife-edge in the build-up to the November 5 vote.

The president-elect also secured the popular vote – becoming the first Republican nominee in 20 years to do so.

He even took a bite into Harris’ support in urban areas, where she was favored, and dominated the black and Hispanic votes and saw a surge in backing from men under the age of 45.
