As the LA wildfire is on track to be the most devastating blaze ever in Southern California, a timely new study identifies the cause. Scientists at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) have uncovered a global pattern of what they’re calling ‘hydroclimate whiplash’ – rapid swings between intensely wet and dangerously dry weather. After years of severe drought, dozens of ‘atmospheric rivers’ – long, narrow bands of water vapor in the atmosphere – deluged California with record-breaking rain in the winter of 2022-23, the scientists say. This buried mountain towns in snow, flooding valleys with rain and snow melt, and setting off hundreds of landslides. Following a…

The most turbulent airports and flight routes of 2024 have been revealed – and it’s not good news if you’ve got a flight booked in South America. The rankings have been drawn up by turbulence forecast website turbli.com, which analysed around 10,000 short and long-haul routes connecting the 550 largest airports in the world. It used ‘eddy dissipation rates’ (EDR) to generate the lists. EDR measures the intensity of turbulence at a given spot – 0-20 is light, 20-40 is moderate, 40-80 severe, and 80-100 is extreme. For each airport, the average turbulence was computed over a volume of around 120 miles…

People who face sexism and racism are more at risk of suffering from hypertension – a potentially fatal health condition. A new study found women who face microaggressions – indirect or subtle acts of discrimination – during pregnancy were more likely to suffer from dangerously high blood pressure. Women who’ve recently given birth already have an elevated risk of high blood pressure, or postpartum hypertension, and in rare cases it can be life threatening and lead to the development of heart disease later in life. Researchers looked at approximately 400 women who had delivered babies in Philadelphia and New York and reported experiencing…
