Despite summer 2023’s Barbiecore craze, it’s the hashtag #latte makeup that has gone wild among the whippersnappers on social media, with 143.1 million views on TikTok and counting, plus another 25 million for #lattemakeuplook.
If your reaction is the kind of confusion that merits an actual caffeine hit, then know that this is a nipper-ish means of referring to the layering of neutrals and bronzes, or, as Australian make-up artist Tanielle Jai, who started the trend back in 2018, notes: ‘It’s just bronzed make-up using caramel tones.’
Sales of toffee-hued eyeshadows, taupe-coloured concealers and hazelnut bronzers are off the scale. Over at John Lewis, Dior’s Backstage Eye Palette in 003 Amber Neutrals (£43, johnlewis.com) is up 101 per cent on summer 2022; Chanel’s Les Beiges Illuminating Oil Illuminating Dry Oil for Face, Body and Hair, Shimmering Veil (£70) up 41 per cent.
The trend also goes by the term #goldenhourglow (43.8 million TikTok hits) to describe the gleam that skin takes on at sunset, when warmth and angles conspire to create a natural facial filter for artfully artless selfies.
Those of us who have been around the block may feel we’ve heard all this before via the simpler notions that were ‘sun-kissed’, ‘fake tan’, and ‘bronzer’. This oat-milk variant is merely a tad balmier, the complexion more radiant and dimensional, with some judicious froth by way of highlighting.

This nuanced play of light and shade means that latte luxe can work for those of us who, in midlife, might be referred to as the ‘cappuccino generation’. Another upside is that you may already own much of the kit required.
As Tanielle Jai elaborates: ‘The important thing is that it’s a monochromatic caramel look, so we are going for yellow-based products . . . staying away from red tones — think of olive tones [and] caramel tones.’
Should your complexion be less than honeyed, seek out Ciaté London’s fiendishly popular Brazilian Glow Bronzing Serum (£25, ciatelondon.com).
Infused with complexion-conditioning hyaluronic acid and vitamin C, it hydrates, brightens and adds gleam.
Apply a pearl-sized amount to the back of your hand, then buff-blend its serum-to-water formula onto face, neck, and/or décolletage before it dries (fast) to become non-transferable.
The prime mover behind the trend, model Hayley Bieber ‘under-contours’, that is, contours under foundation rather than (the more conventional approach of) on top of it. Hayley deploys creamy Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Contour Duo (£84, sephora.co.uk) to sculpt what those in the know refer to as ‘facial architecture’. Have a look on TikTok or YouTube to see how she moulds her cheeks, forehead, lids, nose, and lips. Truly, the woman is an artist.
Those who can’t run to Mr Ford, opt for NYX Professional Makeup Wonder Stick Highlight and Contour Stick (£11, Boots.com) in eight shade pairings. Blend with Boots No7 Contour and Highlighter Brush (£11.96, Boots.com).
After under-contouring, Hayley dabs Hourglass’s new Veil Hydrating Skin Tint (£49, hourglasscosmetics.co.uk) blended with moisturiser where she feels her skin needs it. It’s a sheer veil of colour that instantly boosts moisture levels, providing all-day dewy hydration. She defines her eyes with pale tan liner — try Make Up For Ever’s Artist Color Pencil in 602 Completely Sepia (£19, sephora.co.uk) — before daubing on a hint of blush, gelling up her brows, and swooshing on the mascara.
Her mouth has already been over-lined with a white-ish ‘milk stain’ (exaggerating the naturally pale outline the lips have in youth), to which she adds what appears to be Make Up For Ever’s Artist Color Pencil (£19 makeup forever.com/eu/), in shade 600, Anywhere Caffeine.
She then dips her finger in bronzer and presses it onto her pout to marry up lips and cheeks. A stroke of gloss and she’s done.
As ever on Planet Slap, there’s no one size fits all. Latte looks will suit warm-complexioned women — whether black, white, or Asian.
For those of us with cooler leanings, who rely on contrast — again of whatever skin colour — it will render us less classic than drab.
It’s a beige trench coat kind of face — and you will know whether this fills you with delight or disgust.
RACE YOU TO IT!

COSMETIC CRAVING
If I’d clocked in advance that Nudestix NudeBody Peptide Body Crème (£29, lookfantastic.com) was co-created by spring’s ‘It’ bride, influencer (and daughter of Lionel) Sofia Richie, I’d have ignored it.
Well, more fool me, it’s sensational. The scent! The softness it delivers! It is gorgeously dense, yet non-greasy. Enriched with lactic, glycolic and fruit acids to exfoliate, carrot, sunflower and coconut oil deliver serious nourishment. As for its divine bergamot and lavender aroma — I find myself addicted.
