A makeup artist has revealed three habits that can make you look older instantly.
English makeup artist Wayne Goss, who boasts four million YouTube followers, said using metallic eyeshadow, not using a primer and using the ‘wrong’ type of concealer can add ‘years’ to your face.
‘Majority of us will be using makeup to help improve how we look, or even help cover up some of the wrinkles we’ve gained over the years,’ he said.
‘However due to some mistakes, the makeup that we’re wearing could actually be doing the opposite effect, and could potentially be adding not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face.’

1. Avoid metallic eyeshadow
It may come as a shock to some that metallic eyeshadow can enhance the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and so matte is a better option.
‘Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead, opt for a matte. Matte generally works best as it doesn’t draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases,’ Mr Goss said.
‘Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially as its easier to blend with a good quality brush.’
Mr Goss also advised to never blend eyeshadow with your finger and only use good quality makeup brushes for best results.
2. The type of concealer
Using the wrong concealer shade for your skin is another mistake Mr Goss sees far too often, which can have the opposite effect and highlight creases around the eyes.
‘Generally speaking, people may go too light around the eyes with their concealer which can add years to your face, so its really important to get the colour that suits your skin tone,’ he said.
Cream concealer is always recommended rather than liquids, and Mr Goss suggests applying the product on the inner corner of the eye as it’s the ‘one part of the eye that doesn’t crease’.

3. Always hydrate and use a primer
Many forget to hydrate their skin before applying makeup causing the face to dry out quicker throughout the day or night. This can increase the likelihood of causing fine lines to form and creases to show.
Mr Goss suggested looking at the ingredients of a moisturiser or primer and always prep the face before applying any makeup.
‘As we get older, our skin will naturally become drier, which is why hydrating ingredients are so important as you get into your older age,’ he said.
‘Look for make-up with ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid when you’re on your next make-up and skincare shopping haul to ensure that your products are keeping your skin hydrated.’
A ‘heavy’ amount of moisturiser should be applied to ensure the skin stays hydrated.
‘Use a good primer before you start applying your make-up to ensure it’ll act as a barrier between your skin and your make-up to help the make-up stay in the right places all day, rather than just in the fine lines,’ Mr Goss added.
