A $5.20 pack of chocolate chip cookies from Coles has just beaten out 21 brands to be named the very best in Australia.
Consumer group CHOICE blind taste tested each brand before awarding Coles Bakery’s ‘Dreams Crumb True’ New York Choc Chip biscuits first place.
CHOICE director Mark Serrels said the popular treats, which come in a pack of four, beat out the competition thanks to their intense chocolate flavour and balanced texture.
‘Our experts praised these cookies for their dark chocolate chunks and said they were quite crunchy with a little bit of chew in the centre,’ Mr Serrels said.
Judges described the blue ribbon cookies as ‘rustic’ in style with a subtle aroma of vanilla and generous, uneven chunks of semi sweet chocolate.
Beyond the rich dark chocolate flavour, the cookies also scored an impressive 83 per cent on the sensory scale for their texture and ‘amazing’ mouthfeel.
The champion cookie was also surprisingly the most wholesome of the bunch, boasting the best health star rating with significantly less sugar than other brands.
Coles also took second prize for their Ultimate Cookies 40 per cent chocolate chip ($5), with Woolworths earning a solid third place for their Bakery Chocolate Chunk Cookie ($5.50).

The humble, prize-winning dessert beat out other premium brands such as Cadbury and Arnott’s, which were expected to score in the top three places.
And Aussies agree that the New York style chocolate chip cookie is a ‘serious’ treat for people who like their cookies loaded with chocolate.
‘They have an impressive amount of chocolate chips inside,’ one said.
‘Oh, yum! I am cookie obsessed right now. Need to try these,’ another added.
A few fans of the range said the ‘totally addictive’ Birthday Cake Cookie flavour was even better than the classic choc chip.
For those who prefer homemade treats, former Masterchef contestant, Khanh Ong, recently shared one of his sister’s baking secrets for achieving cookie ‘perfection’.
The trick lies in using three different kinds of sugar, brown, white and raw, to add more depth to the flavour and texture.
‘Raw sugar is in there for the crunch, it doesn’t break down like other sugars, it stays in crunchy granules,’ Khanh explained.
