Dave Portnoy tore into two of his Barstool Sports employees, revealing he nearly ripped up their contracts after they missed a stream of the Mets-Phillies game.
‘I was beside myself,’ Portnoy fumed as he unloaded on Rico Bosco and ‘Smitty’ after they opted not to work during the MLB playoffs this week. Barstool regularly hosts live watch-alongs, capturing the reactions of staff as games unfold.
The Barstool boss claimed he was locked in conversations with the company’s HR department, trying to work out how he could sack both staff members.
‘That’s how mad I was. And by the way, I don’t fire people,’ Portnoy said. ‘I was beside myself. I think I was muttering to myself: this is direct insubordination. I could not believe what I was witnessing.’
Portnoy added: ‘I was as riled up as I’ve been in a long time… I was texting HR, figuring out how to get out of contracts. I could not believe what my eyes were watching.’

Rico Bosco and ‘Smitty’ both skipped the stream for the Mets’ game against the Phillies
Smitty explained in an article on Barstool that he missed the game because it clashed with his 40th birthday.
He insisted he doesn’t regret the decision, claiming the weekend organized by his wife was ‘better than anything I’ve ever done here at Barstool combined’.
But Portnoy invited Smitty to leave the company if he has other priorities. ‘Everyone in the country would cut their f***ing thumbs off to work here,’ the Barstool boss says.
‘Smitty (saying) “I want to spend time with my family…” then get the f*** out of here because I don’t need you. You asked to work here. When your contract is up, you beg for renewal. If Smitty wants to leave… go do whatever you want to do.’
Portnoy branded their decision to skip the stream as a ‘slap in the face’, revealing that he was discussing severance terms with HR. ‘If I fire some people, what does it look like?’ he asked them.
