NBA icon LeBron James was one of six athletes named to the committee of the 2025 Met Gala. Unfortunately, the Lakers star won’t be attending.
In a move that has come as a shock to many of ‘King James” biggest fans, the 39-year-old announced he’d be pulling out of the iconic event due to a knee injury.
‘Unfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won’t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on!,’ James posted to his account on X.
‘Hate to miss an historical event! My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!,’ James added – indicating his wife Savannah would still be attending.
In the wake of the announcement, a number of LeBron fans were concerned that he was retiring. Others made it known that they were sad that he was missing one of the biggest nights in high fashion.
‘Mr James I’m crying and throwing up at the thought of not seeing you at the Met Gala tonight,’ joked one LeBron stan. ‘Please get some crutches or a wheel chair and do what you have to do to be there. Your fans deserve this!’

While those three joked about James’ absence, plenty of commenters initially thought that he was announcing his retirement.
‘you cannot start a tweet like this lmao,’ wrote one commenter.
Another said, ‘F**k I though this was a retirement post, don’t scare us like this again.’
‘Bro chill i thought you were announcing your retirement,’ another user remarked.
James was one of six athletes who were a part of the 2025 Met Gala committee.
LeBron was named an honorary chair while Formula One and fashion icon Lewis Hamilton was one of the four co-chairs.
James’ fans offered up concern, but also were relieved he didn’t announce his retirement
Meanwhile, the host committee is headlined by Simone Biles, her husband Jonathan Owens, track star Sha’Carri Richardson, and Chicago Sky star Angel Reese.
The theme for the event is ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ and is an evening dedicated to the Black dandyism fashion movement.
After the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, it was revealed that James was suffering from a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee during Game 5 of the playoff series.
He was seen limping as he left Crypto.com Arena after picking up the injury.
