An ‘unruly’ Air India passenger is being investigated by police after allegedly urinating on a fellow traveller during a flight to Bangkok.
The business class passenger allegedly relieved himself on his co-traveller just before flight AI 2336 was due to land in the Thai capital on Wednesday.
The lavatories on the more than four hour flight from New Delhi were ‘functional’ at the time of the incident, an airline spokesperson told The Times of India.
The victim, who is understood to be a managing director of a company, was ‘aggrieved’ by the disgusting incident.
Crew reportedly offered to help the traveller file a complaint with police in Bangkok, but the assistance was ‘declined at the time’.
The matter has been reported to the authorities. An internal committee will investigate the incident and determine what action – if any – will be taken against the man.
The unruly passenger had consumed alcohol during the flight, like several other travellers on the long-haul flight, but ‘was not sloshed’, sources told the newspaper.
Multiple incidents of passengers urinating on other travellers after drinking alcohol have been reported in recent years.

The passenger was seated in the business cabin, which offers two by two seating, when he allegedly urinated on another traveller during Wednesday’s flight.
The victim was also a business class passenger, but it is unclear where the pair were seated in relation to each other during the flight.
The incident was reported to cabin crew who ‘followed all laid down procedures’, according to the airline. The authorities were also notified.
‘In addition to warning the unruly passenger, our crew offered to assist an aggrieved passenger to take up a grievance with authorities in Bangkok, which was declined at the time,’ the statement continued.
‘The standing independent committee will be convened to assess the incident and determine the action, if any, to be taken against the unruly passenger.’
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said the ministry will be looking into the incident.
‘Whenever these kinds of incidents happen, the ministry takes note of them. They will speak to the airline, and if there is any wrongdoing, then we will take necessary action,’ Kinjarapu told NDTV.

Wednesday’s flight is not the first time that an Air India passenger has urinated on a fellow traveller.
The airline made headlines in November 2022 when a business class passenger urinated on an elderly woman during a flight from New York to New Delhi.
Shankar Mishra, a vice president at banking giant Wells Fargo, was fired after being accused of urinating on the 72-year-old. Mishra, a resident of Mumbai, was allegedly drunk at the time of the incident.
In her complaint, the alleged victim accused the banking exec of stumbling from a few seats back towards, unzipping his pants and urinating on her. He only stopped when the passenger sitting beside her told him to, she alleged.
Through his lawyers, Mishra claimed that the woman ‘condoned’ the action and that he has compensated her as well as paid for her clothes and bags to be cleaned.
Mishra was arrested, charged sexual harassment and public misconduct, and sent him to judicial custody for 14 days, BBC reported.
Air India removed a pilot and four members of the cabin crew in wake of the incident.
The airline’s CEO Campbell Wilson also expressed ‘regret’ and ‘pain’ over the embarrassing scandal. He also promised to launch a ‘robust reporting system for unruly behaviour on Air India’ flights.

An US university student was banned from ever flying American Airlines again after he was allegedly caught urinating on a fellow passenger while ‘heavily intoxicated’ on board a flight from New York to New Delhi (file photo)
A few months later, in March 2023, an US university student was arrested in India after he allegedly urinated on another passenger during an American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi.
Aryan Vohra, 21, was allegedly caught urinating on a fellow passenger while ‘heavily intoxicated’ on board the flight.
The Indian national, who was travelling to India for his sister’s wedding, was ‘heavily intoxicated’ and ignored instructions from the crew.
He also ‘misbehaved’ as he was being escorted from the plane by security personnel.
Vohra was arrested by police officers when the plane touched down in New Delhi and banned from ever flying with American Airlines again.
