Gatwick Airport has changed its rules on liquids and laptops at security, just in time for the Easter holidays.
Passengers will no longer need to put their liquids in a clear plastic bag or remove electronics, such as laptops, from their bags at security.
This is due to the airport’s new scanners which Gatwick bosses have described as ‘cutting-edge technology’.
The airport’s scanners are HI-SCAN 6060 CTiX CT scanners, designed by Smiths Detection, and are expected to cut waiting times at security.
The scanners use X-ray technology to create a 3D view of a bag’s contents. Security staff can then tilt, enhance and rotate the images to see what’s inside, removing the need for passengers to take liquids and electronics out of their bag.
This technology has actually been used by airports to scan hold luggage for some time but the first scanners were too large for passenger areas.
Travellers will still need to keep to the 100ml rule in hand luggage and make sure all their liquids are within the requirements.
However, passengers at several of the UK’s other major airports, will still need to follow the old rules.

Heathrow, Stansted and Manchester are among the UK’s major airports to still require passengers to remove liquids from their bag.
Several airports, including Heathrow, have confirmed they are installing the new equipment.
Heathrow has said it is ‘in the process of upgrading its security equipment’ which is set to ‘transform the passenger experience’.
Manchester Airport has said: ‘Manchester Airport Security is in the process of upgrading its equipment. This next-generation security will transform the passenger experience by making it smoother, seamless and stress-free. However, until we’ve upgraded all of our security screening equipment, passengers should prepare for security as normal.’
In a statement, Glasgow Airport said it is aiming to have the scanners in place by the ‘end of April‘.
London Stansted, Southampton and East Midlands airports have also confirmed they are in the process of upgrading their equipment.
The Government’s initial deadline for all UK airports to have the new technology was June 1 2024 but this was delayed after several hubs were unable to meet the target.
Passengers also need to be aware that the new technology isn’t in place in many countries around the world.
