This European theme park is stealing the top spot from Disneyland Paris for its short queues – and is also home to Europe’s tallest and fastest roller coaster.
PortAventura, in Salou, Spain, is the country’s most popular theme park, attracting around 5.3 million visitors a year.
That’s less than a third of Disneyland’s 16.1 million guests – and, for that reason, has been dubbed a ‘better’ place to go to avoid the famously long lines.
Transporting parkgoers to different worlds, PortAventura is themed around five regions: the Mediterranean, the Far West, Polynesia, Mexico and China.
It also has SesamoAdventura, a dedicated kids’ area centred around Sesame Street.
Some of PortAventura’s most thrill-seeking rides include Shambhala – one of the tallest and fastest roller coasters in Europe, soaring to a height of 76 metres and reaching up to 134 km/h – and Hurakan Condor, a free-fall tower that plunges riders from a height of 100 metres.
PortAventura also has a water park, Caribe Aquatic Park, full of water slides.
And Ferrari Land, an area of the park dedicated to the car brand, is home to Europe’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster, the mighty Red Force.

It is an impressive 112 metres tall and goes at the speed of 112 miles per hour.
To put this into perspective, the UK’s tallest roller coaster, Hyperia, which opened in Thorpe Park last year, is 72 metres high and 80 miles per hour.
On Tripadvisor, some guests say PortAventura is ‘Spain’s Disney’, with commenters saying it’s ‘more immersive than Disney’ thanks to its themes.
One person from Sydney, Australia, said on Tripadvisor: ‘The queue times were very acceptable – the maximum wait time that we experienced was about 30 minutes – and well worth it, it’s better than Disneyland.’
A visitor from County Durham said: ‘This is much better than Disneyland Paris, the rides were super fun with short bearable queues (15-30mins).
‘This park is well laid out and features many rides suited for all types of thrill seeker.’
Another said: ‘The end of night show was like Disney or Olympics opening – very impressed.’
It even was more enjoyable than UK theme parks for some: ‘I found that this park was better than some of the Disney and British theme parks I had been to.’

Entry to the park starts at £33.45 for adults or £29.27 for children.
Meanwhile, budget-friendly flights to Barcelona can be found in the UK, with East Midlands Airport currently offering fares for under £15.
