What would you do to make your mother happy? One man has gone further than most so that his mum can see the most famous attractions in China.
Xiao Ma, 31, from Xinjiang, carried his mother piggyback-style so that she could travel their vast home country after hemiplegia – paralysis on one side of the body – left her unable to walk.
The devoted son sold his home to fund their adventure, but his dedication to his family began when he was just eight years old after a car crash killed his father and left his mother with a brain injury.
Young Ma became the head of the household and supported his relatives throughout his childhood.
In a post on social media, Ma explains: ’23 years ago, my mother suffered in a car accident, which caused hemiplegia, brain atrophy [loss of brain cells and function], and schizophrenia.
‘I became an eight-year-old single parent to my six-year-old sister and supported the family.’
The crash left Mrs Xiao bedridden for years but she improved enough over time to use a wheelchair. Her cognition is also affected with reports stating she has regressed to a childlike mental age and can no longer speak.
In adulthood, Ma decided that he wanted to spend as much time with his mum as possible – and so they set out on the road together. But her mobility was so limited that he had to give her piggybacks when her wheelchair could not be used.

Ma has spent the years since carrying his disabled mum and documenting their adventure online.
Having walked up the Great Wall with his mum on his back and visited many other sights Xiao hoped that her health would improve.
On social media site Douyin, where Ma has 113,000 followers, he says in a translated post: ‘I traveled around China with my mother on my back. During the trip, I saw my mother’s long-lost smile.
‘Through rehabilitation treatment and exercise, my goal is to say goodbye to the wheelchair forever and cure her illness with love and companionship.’
A surgery has since enabled Mrs Xiao to stand and walk with support.
Speaking of his mum, Ma says: ‘Although she is not healthy, she gave me life. I want to give her complete love. I put down my work and have taken my mother to travel around the country.
‘So far, I have been to the entire northern Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Xi’an, Nanjing, Beijing, watched the national flag raising and climbed the Great Wall.’
In the caption of a video, Ma adds: ‘Although my mother is not perfect I want to give her a perfect life. Love does not wait. We will always owe our parents. When we have time, spend more time with them.’
After his posts went viral, many commenters vowed to spend more time with their parents while they still can.
