A major cruise company is cracking down on noisy passengers with a new rule banning people from using Bluetooth speakers on its private island.
Royal Caribbean, one of the world’s largest cruise companies, has warned passengers to stop using the devices at CocoCay, its island in the Bahamas.
In a message posted on its website, it says: ‘You’ll find music to set the soundtrack to your day playing throughout the island.
‘But if you’d prefer to listen to your own selection of music, we ask that you please do so with personal headphones.’
CocoCay is a popular stop that’s often included on the brand’s Caribbean cruise itineraries.
The warning comes after one cruise passenger said they saw a family have their speaker confiscated at another of Royal Caribbean’s private destinations, Labadee in Haiti.
‘Modestcouch’ writes on Reddit: ‘A large family comes down [to the beach] and sets up in the front row.
‘Loads up the speakers and sets it to top volume. Then they all head into the water.’

The holidaymaker explained that one of the beach lifeguards then came to get the speaker.
‘Modestcouch’ says: ‘The guy swims back and is yelling at the lifeguard, who is just smiling at the guy.
‘Finally the lifeguard says: “No speakers”. He can get it back when he leaves.’
And Bluetooth speakers definitely aren’t popular among cruise guests.
Reddit user ‘Thick_Asparagus3978’ says: ‘Please ban them everywhere. I have reached my limits with speakers being played constantly wherever I go.’
‘Alexfaace’ adds: ‘There is so much noise on a cruise ship. I genuinely don’t understand how anyone thinks “Let me add more noise”.’
Carnival Cruise Line, another major line, banned Bluetooth speakers from all its ships in November 2024.
The company’s official ambassador, John Heald, said at the time: ‘Bluetooth speakers will be collected and returned at the end of the cruise as they are not allowed anywhere on the ship.’
