A British woman living in Australia has shared the ‘odd’ differences she’s noticed since relocating Down Under.
Sydney Graves, a midwife from the UK, emigrated from Newcastle to Melbourne in 2024, and has since documented the ‘highs and lows’ of her move on TikTok.
In a video posted to her page, @ukmidwifedownunder, in February, the content creator discussed trading hours in Australia, expressing her bewilderment at the difference in opening and closing times compared to England.
She said: ‘I’ve lived in Australia for a year, and a couple of things are a bit odd that they do here.’
‘Food shops – like, the equivalent of Asda and Tesco – are open on a Sunday until late at night.
‘I feel like in England, even the 24 hours ones close on a Sunday – but they’re just open here all the time.’
Sydney went on to share her shock at cafés closing earlier than their British counterparts, adding: ‘Cafés out here, they shut all of them. They shut at like 3pm or 3.30pm.
‘You know how people take their kids to a café after school in England and go to the park? No no, there’s none open.’

The midwife reflected on how ‘different parts of the world’ uphold their own ‘set of traditions,’ before continuing: ‘My dad lives in Germany, and on a Sunday – nothing is open.
‘But here, you can go to a shopping centre and it’s open til late. Poor b*****s – they don’t get any time off.’
The video has since amassed over 200 comments, with many Australians explaining the reason behind the difference in trading hours, while others pointed out the law doesn’t apply to each region or city.
One person wrote, ‘It’s called trading laws,’ while another commented: ‘They would get days off in the week
Another explained: ‘Before Covid most cafe’s were open till 5 or later. Nowadays wages are too expensive or employers can’t find workers to work those shifts.’
A third viewer clarified: ‘Haha well they do get days off, staff have rotating rosters and those who do work on Sunday get higher rates. I hate that cafes close early too but it’s because they’re open since 6am.’
A fourth wrote: ‘Not in Adelaide, shopping centres only open from 11-5! But yeah, cafe’s close 3-3.30!’
Meanwhile, one Australian noted: ‘In the UK and parts of Europe, some of open/close hours are a hang over from the Church. Cafe’s here close early because they open really early.’

Another viewer, from Scotland, added: ‘Have you never been to Scotland – everything open on a Sunday.’
Britons have been flocking Down Under in search of a better life, with nearly 50,000 arriving to the country on working holiday visas in 2024 alone.
