Cottage cheese is the latest supermarket staple to disappear from shelves due to a shortage across Australia, and it’s all thanks to a viral recipe that’s got everyone talking.
The dish – a hot honey sweet potato beef bowl – has exploded in popularity, leaving countless shoppers empty-handed as they search for the now-sold-out key ingredient: cottage cheese.
The simple yet delicious recipe calls for roasted sweet potato, beef mince seasoned with nacho spices, avocado, hot chilli honey and, of course, cottage cheese.
Tina Provis was among the shoppers to jump on the viral bandwagon.
However, things didn’t go to plan when she went to the dairy aisle to pick up the last ingredient she needed for the recipe – only to be greeted by a red note alongside the empty shelf.
‘This line is temporarily unavailable. We apologise for any inconvenience,’ the note read.
Expressing her frustration, the Aussie reality star said: ‘I just got all the ingredients for the viral sweet potato beef bowl… but are we joking? Have we really sold out cottage cheese over this?’
‘Where is the cottage cheese? I just want to try the viral cottage cheese bowl.’
It seems there’s a cottage cheese shortage happening worldwide, not just in Australia, with many expressing their frustration over the sought-after product.

Cottage cheese is the latest supermarket staple to vanish from shelves across Australia, and it’s all thanks to a viral recipe that has everyone scrambling to get their hands on it
‘It’s honestly so annoying for us who use cottage cheese on the regular before this viral bowl,’ one raged.
‘There’s been a cottage cheese shortage for like over six months… now y’all are swooping in and making it even harder to find,’ another shared.
‘Dude, I swear to god, is there like a freaking shortage of cottage cheese in the world? Because I can’t find any it in any grocery store I’ve been to,’ one revealed.
‘It’s ridiculous!! Not a single cottage cheese in sight,’ another added.
The cottage cheese shortage comes after the simple recipe went viral when many food content creators, including Michael Finch, made the dish.
‘Honest to god, I didn’t think I was going to like the whole cottage cheese thing but with the hot honey mixed with it, it’s so good,’ Finch said as he taste tested the dish.
Taking another bite of the flavourful bowl, Finch said with delight, ‘Wow.’
Some shoppers have joked Finch may have sparked a cottage cheese shortage after they struggled to find the product at Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA.
Those who have made the viral dish at home have raved about how delicious it is, with one saying: ‘Best thing that has ever entered my mouth.’

Other home cooks revealed they have created their own versions, adding extra ingredients including pickled red onion, green onion, black beans, capsicum, egg whites, and chilli onion crunch for extra depth.
But as demand for the dish skyrockets, Aussie shoppers are left frantically searching for the key ingredient.
‘Oh my god, I literally went to three supermarkets today for it. I blame Michael Finch,’ one joked, referencing the content creator who helped propel the recipe into viral fame.
‘This literally happened to me last night, I went to Coles, Woolies, and Aldi and none had cottage cheese!’ another complained.
Some shoppers have resorted to creative swaps, with one saying, ‘I used Greek yoghurt and it was so good.’
While another suggested, ‘Just use ricotta instead – it’s just as good.’

When Daily Mail Australia visited a Coles store, there was no cottage cheese in sight
Others are taking matters into their own hands – literally.
‘I made [cottage cheese] yesterday, took me 10 minutes, it’s so easy. All you need is milk and vinegar,’ one person revealed, proving that DIY cottage cheese is now a thing.
And it’s not just cottage cheese that’s in high demand.
One shopper pointed out, ‘The hot chilli honey is also sold out at my local Woolworths.’
Meanwhile, some are waiting for the next viral trend to pass.
‘Me making my feta and tomato pasta and my cucumber salad, waiting for the next viral recipe to drop so I can actually get the ingredients to make this one,’ a frustrated shopper joked.
‘I haven’t moved on from whipped coffee in 2020 yet,’ another wrote.
With no signs of the trend slowing down, cottage cheese may remain the hottest commodity in Aussie supermarkets.
