It was one of the make-a-wish-come-true moments sprinkled through an otherwise formal occasion.
‘Joining us in the gallery tonight is a young man who truly loves our police. The doctors gave him five months at most to live. That was more than six years ago,’ said President Donald Trump as he introduced 13-year-old Devarjaye ‘DJ’ Daniel who was watching the joint address to Congress from the gallery.
‘Since that time, DJ and his dad have been on a quest to make his dream come true.’
He then dispatched the director of the U.S. Secret Service Sean Curran to deliver a certificate making DJ an honorary agent.
The moment went viral and a poll for DailyMail.com shows how it and other made-for-television moments resonated with viewers on Tuesday night.
It was also likely one of the factors that led voters to describe Trump in an unfamiliar way: Caring.
When pollsters J.L. Partners asked 774 viewers for their one-word description of the best moment from the night, the biggest word at the center of a word cloud was ‘people’ alongside the word ‘America.’
‘Boy,’ ‘cancer,’ ‘kid,’ and ‘agent,’ all figured prominently.

James Johnson, co-founder of J.L. Partners, said: ‘I was struck by a real surprise finding in our poll for a Trump speech: People felt it was “caring.”
‘Trump used the gallery to a larger extent than most former presidents—I suspect that showed off a different side to Trump for many and was a savvy move.’
It was a reminder of Trump’s rise to stratospheric fame in reality TV, and his role of producer-in-chief at the White House.
And it paved the way for a series of very human moments in one of the most formal dates on the Washington, D.C., calendar—a speech to lawmakers.
Guests referenced by Trump included Marc Fogel, freed by Russia after being arrested with cannabis and sentenced to 14 years in prison, who sat alongside his 95-year-old mother, and angel moms whose daughters had been murdered by illegal immigrants.
In a moment of theater, Trump held up an executive order renaming a Texas wildlife refuge in honor of Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old girl who was strangled to death. Two undocumented Venezuelan immigrants have been charged with capital murder.
And in another moment designed to be clipped and shared online, the president introduced high school senior Jason Hartley, describing how he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps of service by attending the US Military Academy at West Point.
‘That’s a very big deal getting in,’ said the president.

‘That’s a hard one to get into, but I’m pleased to inform you that your application has been accepted.’
It brought the house down.
In all it led 53 percent of viewers to say the speech was ‘caring,’ compared with 38 per cent of viewers who said it was not.
At her briefing the next day, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the moments had a clear purpose.
‘Last night, you also saw who motivates the president to work so hard every day,’ she said, before listing the guests.
‘And in one of the greatest surprise moments of the night, DJ Daniel, an incredible 13-year-old boy who is beating brain cancer saw his dreams fulfilled by President Trump when he was made an honorary Secret Service agent.’
Curran, the agent, who presented the certificate has become a well-known face himself. He hustled to Trump’s side seconds after an assassin’s bullet grazed the former and future president’s ear at a rally in Pennsylvania last year.
Overall viewers gave the speech a thumbs up.
It may have included taunts and boasts but some 57 percent of respondents said they approved.

Only 32 percent gave it a thumbs down.
And some 58 percent said they thought it struck a generally optimistic tone, after Trump announced that the ‘American Dream is surging bigger and better than ever before.’
‘This was a knockout speech for Trump,’ said pollster James Johnson. ‘Viewers felt he was confident, optimistic, and strong – and they left feeling more positive about the future of America than when they left.’
Trump used the address to take a victory lap six weeks after taking office, laying out a string of achievements and listing objectives for the next four years.
‘It has been nothing but swift and unrelenting action,’ he said. ‘The people elected me to do the job, and I am doing it.’
The prime-time speech was his first to Congress since returning to power. And it highlighted another extraordinary facet of Trump’s political comeback in Washington, where his allies hold the House and Senate, allowing him almost unfettered power.
