Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum recalled the first time he met NBA icon Michael Jordan – and the embarrassing moment that defined their first encounter.
Speaking on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, the reigning NBA champion Tatum said that he first met ‘His Airness’ back in 2019 right after signing with the Jordan brand.
The brand was hosting a retreat in Paris that summer and Tatum had been invited to join on the eve of his third NBA season.
‘I met MJ in 2019 when I first was introduced to the brand and first signed over and I met him in Paris… they had a bunch of athletes, it was a big event they used to do in the summer before Covid. It was my first introduction to everyone on the team and it was like a “welcome to the family” moment,’ Tatum said.
He then admitted that he ‘ruined’ that moment later in the evening at a dinner.
‘I walk in… I think I just turned 21, it was MJ, his wife, and Spike Lee they were sitting at the table. And my table was over there, and I just wanted to go introduce myself again and go sit down.

Since joining the NBA in 2017, Tatum has become one of the biggest stars in the league
‘I was so nervous. My hands were shaking, and I go to shake his hand and I knock over his wine glass. And I spill it everywhere, and I break the glass, and I’m speechless.’
But Tatum said that the 61-year-old Jordan was understanding: ‘He was super cool about it because that’s probably happening a thousand times. That’s something we laugh about.’
Tatum has remained with the Jordan brand ever since he first singed in 2019 – releasing three signature shoes with the label.
The most recent, the ‘Jordan Tatum 3’ dropped in September – just before Tatum and the Celtics began the defense of their record-setting 18th NBA championship.
Since being drafted by Boston third overall in the 2017 NBA Draft out of Duke, Tatum has become one of the biggest stars in the league.
He’s a five-time NBA All-Star and has been named to the All-NBA First team for the past three seasons in a row.
