ChatGPT is down across the US as users report seeing a ‘bad gateway’ error message when using the AI tool.
Downdetector, a site that monitors online outages, shows issues hit the OpenAI-owned platform around 7am ET.
The error message indicates that one server received an invalid response from another, creating a communication breakdown.
Many users have shared their frustrations on X, saying they ‘feel lost without it.’
‘Seriously, how am I supposed to brainstorm, write, and research without my AI assistant,’ an X user posted.
According to the most recent data, ChatGPT has 300 million weekly active users and 123.5 million daily active users. It is unclear how many users are experiencing issues.
The outage comes as OpenAI founder Sam Altman backs President Donald Trump‘s new AI venture, Stargate, which will see a $500 billion investment within four years.

ChatGPT is down across the US as users report seeing a ‘bad gateway’ error message when using the AI tool
Downdetector has received thousands of outage reports from ChatGPT users, citing problems with the AI tool and website.
An outage map shows problems along the East Coast as Americans are heading into work.
Many people have become accustomed to using the AI tool to assist with daily tasks such as research, writing up reports, drafting emails and data analysis.
OpenAI’s service page shows the company is investigating the issue.
We are currently experiencing elevated error rates in the API. We are currently investigating,’ OpenAI shared in a status message posted just before 7am ET on Thursday.
Trump’s Stargate would see major development of AI infrastructure.
‘This will be the most important project of this era,’ said Altman said Tuesday while visiting the White House just one day after the president’s inauguration.
Altman has long wanted OpenAI to build its own data centers as it currently relies on Microsoft data centers.
