A mother and daughter were murdered days after Christmas – and just before her son committed suicide – in a mystery that remains unsolved a year later.
Jean Robinson, 76, and her daughter, Allison ‘Joy’ Cumming, 53, were found dead on December 28, 2023, at Cumming’s dog day care center in Farmington, Maine, the Pawsitive Dog Kennel.
The mystery deepened when it was raveled that Robinson’s son William ‘Neville’ Cumming Jr. had killed himself four days after the murders.
Police had reportedly tried tracking Neville down following the killings of his mom and sister, suggesting he could have been a suspect.
But Maine State Police has failed to provide any updates about the killings, including how the women died. In March, MSP spokesperson Shannon Moss said ‘the investigation was complex and not dictated by the public’s desire to know details,’ as reported by The Maine Wire.
‘The police have told me absolutely nothing about what happened,’ Neville’s father Bill Cumming, Sr. told the outlet.
‘All I know is that my daughter and her mother were murdered, and four days later, my son committed suicide.’
The father and others who knew Neville have said they don’t think he would have killed his mother and sister. One of his friends suggested Neville could have been the victim of some Massachusetts mob plot.

Officials have not revealed how the two women were murdered
‘The thing I can imagine happening is he did something to piss off an organized crime family, and to teach him a lesson, they killed his sister and his mother. He felt so badly about it that he killed himself,’ one person told The Maine Wire.
‘That scenario I can imagine.’
Neville, a failed marijuana entrepreneur, had served federal prison time after being convicted of large-scale cannabis cultivation in 2000.
His father said that one of Neville’s business partners had come angrily looking for and asking for money he was owed before Neville’s suicide.
The unnamed business partner told The Maine Wire that Neville owed him more than $50,000 in personal loans for a failed legal cannabis venture.
Neville had reportedly been struggling financial in the months before his death, filing for bankruptcy in October, 2023. He had apparently withdrawn from friends after an unusual Boston trip that February.
When reached for comment by the Maine outlet, MSP spokesperson Shannon Moss said ‘Detectives and the AG’s office are waiting on results from the crime lab to come back.’
A GoFundMe was created for funeral costs for Joy, who was a beloved member of her community.
