- Clash between YouTuber and former heavyweight champ came well hyped
- Millions of viewers were let down by lukewarm fight with punches pulled
- Aussie sport stars were among those fuming at the ‘con job’
Australian athletes from multiple codes have been left fuming by the Jake Paul and Mike Tyson ‘con job’, slamming the YouTube star for pulling his punches against ‘sad’ former heavyweight champion.
Paul, 27, predictably claimed a unanimous points decision [80-72, 79-73, 79-73] against Tyson, 58, in a lukewarm fight that did not live up to any of the pre-match hype.
It left several Aussie sport stars fuming after they spent the majority of their lives working their backsides off to reach the top of their respective sports.
When asked by a follower ‘Who won? I missed it’, former NBA star and Australian Olympian Andrew Bogut bluntly replied ‘Netflix‘.
Another Aussie Olympics star Shane Heal was equally unimpressed.
‘I’m not sure what else people expected but this is bad,’ he posted during the fight.
AFL star Scott Pendlebury was another to slam the event, posting a poll before the fight asking ‘Will anyone watch the Mike Tyson fight today?’.
Then when the bout had concluded, he added: ‘Watched the first 3 rounds! That was terrible! Grab the money and run job.’
Jake Paul talked a big game but has been accused of pulling his punches to avoid knocking Mike Tyson out
Tyson showed his age in the ring, came into the bout injured and was unable to have any impact compared to his glory days
NRL star Jackson Hastings accused Paul of going too soft on Tyson to avoid hurting the ageing superstar.
Both fighters wore 14oz training gloves for the bout while rounds were reduced to two minutes as well.
‘I don’t mind Jake. But there was definitely a no knock out cause, no one wanted to see Mike KO’d,’ the former Knights playmaker posted.
It wasn’t just Australians that found the Tyson bout ‘sad’.
English former professional boxer Tony Bellew said it was obvious Paul had pulled his punches to avoid a PR nightmare by knocking out Tyson.
‘I don’t like this stupid idiot kid but I will say this … he stopped beating on Mike there and showed him some respect and dignity by letting him survive,’ he posted.
Paul bowed to Tyson as a mark of respect but fight fans believe that respect may have robbed viewers of any spectacle
Boxing superstar Terence Crawford was livid over the bout, labelling it ‘trash’ after watching Tyson’s obvious decline.
‘I love Mike Tyson, but they giving him too much credit. He looked like trash, to train that long and only throw 97 punches the whole fight is crazy. I’m just glad he didn’t get hurt out there,’ he posted.
Aussie sport fans were also left unimpressed by the display.
‘The training montages did not match up with how genuinely old Mike is looking,’ one posted during the fight.
‘It wasn’t a fight, it was a farce! Should never have been sanctioned or allowed to go ahead,’ fumed another.
‘Credit to Jake Paul + Mike Tyson for pulling off one of the great cons of century,’ added yet another.
